When most people think of a dental exam, they picture a dentist peering into their mouth and tapping a few teeth. That impression is a couple of decades out of date. A modern AI-supported dental exam at our clinic is a systematic, comprehensive health assessment that screens for over 12 conditions — most of which cause no symptoms in their early stages.
The exam is the most important appointment on your dental calendar. Everything else — treatment, prevention, early intervention — flows from what we discover here.
What Actually Happens
A comprehensive exam at For Your Smile Dental covers:
- Digital X-rays — low-radiation radiographs reviewed instantly by Pearl AI
- Tooth-by-tooth assessment — clinical inspection of every tooth for decay, fractures, and restoration integrity
- Periodontal assessment — pocket depth measurements and AI-tracked bone levels
- Bite and jaw assessment — TMJ evaluation, occlusion, wear patterns
- Oral cancer screening — full soft tissue examination
- Existing restorations check — crowns, fillings, bridges reviewed for integrity
- Treatment plan and prioritisation — what needs attention now versus monitoring
The AI Radiograph Review
Every set of X-rays taken at our clinic is reviewed by Pearl AI before your dentist discusses findings with you. The AI identifies 12+ conditions — interproximal cavities, bone loss, calculus, periapical lesions, fractures, secondary decay under existing restorations, and more — and annotates them directly on your images.
You see exactly what we see. There's no "trust me, there's a cavity there" — you see it yourself, labelled, on your own X-ray, before we discuss any treatment.
AI catches sub-clinical findings that are easy to miss on visual review alone — particularly interproximal cavities (between teeth) in their earliest stages, when a small filling is all that's needed.
Oral Cancer Screening
Every comprehensive exam includes a full soft tissue examination — lips, tongue, floor of the mouth, palate, and throat. Oral cancer is highly treatable when detected early; the 5-year survival rate for localised oral cancer is over 80%. When it's diagnosed at a late stage, that drops significantly.
Most patients have no idea this screening is happening. It takes less than 2 minutes and is included as standard at every comprehensive exam — at no additional charge.
How Often Do You Need One?
Every 6 months for most adults. Patients with higher caries risk, active gum disease, or complex medical history may benefit from more frequent recalls — we'll advise you based on your individual situation. Children should be seen every 6 months from their first visit.
CDCP Coverage
Comprehensive dental exams and X-rays are covered under the Canadian Dental Care Plan for eligible patients. At our clinic, your covered exam also includes Pearl AI radiograph analysis — at no additional cost, because it's simply how we practise dentistry.
